Hidden corners of Mljet
Skriveni mljetski kantuni is an ethno-gastronomic event held in the inland villages of the island of Mljet during major religious festivities, from June to December. The event celebrates the traditional way of life of the local community and highlights the rich gastronomic and cultural heritage of the island.
The project was launched in 2014 on the feast of the Assumption in the village of Korita, with the aim of preserving local traditions and reviving life in the historic villages of Mljet. Over time, it has grown into a recognizable cultural event that introduces visitors to the authentic customs and heritage of the island.
The programme typically begins with a holy mass, followed by a traditional welcome drink for pilgrims and visitors and the opening of an exhibition of old photographs. Throughout the day, visitors can discover a variety of homemade products and traditional dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients.
A special atmosphere is created by local women dressed in traditional costumes, who prepare and present authentic island specialities, while visitors have the opportunity to taste and purchase various products made by local producers. The event is further enriched by performances of live music, klapa singing and folklore, creating a warm and authentic celebration of tradition and community.
By combining gastronomy, heritage and local customs, Skriveni mljetski kantuni contribute to preserving the island’s cultural identity while enriching the cultural and tourism offer of Mljet.
