Lastovo Carnival
The Lastovo Carnival is a traditional celebration held on the island of Lastovo on the day before Ash Wednesday, the last day before Lent. The tradition dates back to the 15th century, based on the legend of the release of a Turkish soldier, which prevented retribution. During the celebration, a procession of men, known as pokladari, dressed in colorful costumes, ride horses and carry the effigy of Poklad through the village. The event culminates in the spectacular burning of the effigy, symbolizing victory and liberation. Accompanied by music and dance, the celebration is filled with tamburitza music, dancing, and general merriment. The whole island participates in the festivities, creating an atmosphere of community and preserving island traditions, making the Carnival a special event in the yearly calendar.
