The wine list of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County

Favourable climate conditions and a long wine-growing tradition are the reason why some of the finest wines are now produced in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The cultural heritage related to wine in southern Croatia is centuries long, which is why all visitors have the chance to get to know the fantastic flavours of the indigenous varieties, as well as the history and production process for each of them. Although the wine list includes many high-quality varieties, we will concentrate on the most significant and most recognisable, whose aromas are a must for any wine connoisseur.

WHITE WINE VARIETIES

Malvasija

This renowned wine was first mentioned back in 1424, in the era of the Republic of Ragusa, when records referred to it as “malvasija dubrovačka”. It is considered one of the oldest indigenous varieties in the Mediterranean, and it is highly valued for its distinctive flavour and unique aromas. It is mostly grown in Konavle, and today it is described as one of the varieties particularly popular with the Dubrovnik nobility. The malvasija can be characterised as a particularly versatile wine – it pairs equally as well with meat and fish dishes, it is strong and crisp, and, depending on the method of production, it can be dry, semi-dry or sweet, when it is best enjoyed with a dessert.

Pošip

Characteristic of the island of Korčula, pošip is considered one of the most significant white wine varieties, not only in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, but throughout Croatia. It pairs wonderfully with the delicious fish and seafood dishes, as it balances them, it is very refreshing and usually described as fruity, vivacious and elegant. Dried apricots and figs are the most prominent fruity notes in pošip, while its acidity gives it crisp and lively properties. The most significant areas where it is grown are Čara and Smokvica, and nowadays pošip is one of the most popular Dalmatian white wine varieties.

Grk

Another variety characteristic of Korčula is the Grk, used for the production of the eponymous wine. It is rare and very sought-after due to the fact that it is grown exclusively in the central plains of Lumbarda on Korčula. This is a dry wine which pairs well with seafood and white meat, and it is characterised by fruity and citrus notes, as well as a high acidity. It is served with entrées and as an aperitif, chilled to 12°C, and experts consider it as the perfect base for the production of the dessert wine prošek.

Rukatac

Speaking of white wine varieties, we have to mention the rukatac, also known as maraština, which became one of the most recognisable wines of the Croatian south through the centuries. Some describe it as a kind of Dalmatian graševina, and it is characterised by its bright yellow colour with a slight greenish tint. Just like pošip, rukatac is another refreshing wine, perfectly paired with dishes from the sea, such as oily fish or molluscs, as well as salads and various pasta dishes. Although it is not an indigenous variety, it was the most widely spread white variety in Dalmatia, and, except for the production of the traditional white wine, today it is also used for orange wines obtained through the maceration process.

RED WINE VARIETIES

Plavac mali

When discussing red wine varieties from the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, the Plavac Mali is definitely the first on every wine connoisseur’s mind, and it has secured Pelješac a renowned spot on the global wine scene. This is the most recognisable and most represented red wine variety in the very south of Croatia. Two wine regions are particularly notable: Dingač and Postup, home to some of the steepest vineyards in the world, always exposed to sunlight due to their southern orientation. It has a striking colour, compared to rubies, and its flavours are the combination of red fruits, such as sour and sweet cherries, as well as herbs and spices.

Dingač and Postup

There are two sub-varieties within the Plavac Mali variety that deserve to be singled out: Dingač and Postup. They were named for the locations on Pelješac peninsula where they are grown, both areas with specific soil and microclimate conditions and special viticulture methods. Thanks to their quality, strong aromas and opulent flavours, they are frequently found in the best wine lists throughout Croatia. Red wines produced from these varieties are dark red in colour, have high concentrations of tannin and alcohol, and are characterised by enticing aromas.  Postup is said to be somewhat “softer” than Dingač, which is often compared with the world’s finest red wines.

Tribidrag

Although not as well known as Plavac Mali, tribidrag or crljenjak, another indigenous Croatian variety, is also worth singling out among the red wine varieties. It has a rich history, and unlike Dingač and Postup, wines made from the tribidrag variety are usually moderate in tannins, which makes them very easily drinkable. Tribidrag wines pair fantastically with meat dishes, and their aromas are dominated by raspberries, blackberries and cherries, as well as some distinct flavours such as vanilla and black pepper, and you can even taste some interesting notes of leather, tree bark or chocolate, making them unique.

Wines from the Dubrovnik-Neretva County owe their high quality and excellent characteristics to the specific position, Mediterranean climate, geological structure of the soil, as well as the hard work invested in wine production. Their significance for the tradition and tourism is clear from the various wine tours aimed at tourists, offering wine tastings as the way to get to know the authentic wine flavours of our region.

Wine tastings and wine tourism as a fun break from beach life

Tourist offer is always linked to culinary experiences, and wine tastings and various wine tours are an important part as they offer all visitors the chance to try some delicious wines, and to get to know the tradition, wine-making history, and the beautiful scenery dominated by vineyards.

The first things that come to mind when we think of summer holidays are sunshine, the sea and relaxing on the beach. Still, sometimes we might need a “break” from these activities, and sometimes the weather makes us take that break. However, dark clouds and the annoying rain don’t necessarily mean that we need to hide somewhere – they just mean that it’s time for a change of scenery. Wine tastings and wine tours are certainly popular, not just during the peak season, but in early and late season, as well. Our guests get to taste different wines, find out more about their production processes, visit vineyards and wine cellars, and learn more about the background of every single wine.

What makes wine tasting such an excellent idea?

Wine tasting is at the heart of every wine tour, enabling every wine enthusiast to enjoy the aromas, flavours and colours of wine, as well as its origin stories. It’s even more special if you can tour the vineyard while wine tasting. This way, you can learn more about vine cultivation and find out interesting facts about the microclimate conditions, soil quality, treatment techniques, all of which are crucial for the quality of the final wine product. A visit to a wine cellar is another interesting idea, enabling guests to learn about the various stages of wine production, fermentation, ageing and bottling. No wine tour or tasting is complete without an accompanying culinary experience. Nothing pairs better with a good wine than delicious local food, which also gives you a chance to learn how to pair a certain wine with specific dishes.

A visit to the Dubrovnik-Neretva region is also an excellent chance to spend a day (or several days) tasting wine and visiting local wineries. There is plenty of them at the very south of the country so, wherever you go, you won’t have any trouble stumbling upon fantastic wine stories and families who have been retelling them for decades.

There aren’t many wineries in Dubrovnik as such, but if you want to spend more time there, you can’t go wrong if you visit any of the countless bars and wine bars with excellent wine lists, as they offer you the possibility to taste various wines from all over the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, all in one place. There are several wine spots worthy of visiting in the vicinity of Dubrovnik, particularly in Konavle. Click here for a complete list of wineries in Dubrovnik and its surroundings.

Some of the most renowned Croatian wines are produced in Korčula, so make sure you include local wineries in your wine tour and tasting plans. The island is known for its indigenous varieties. Korčula wines are famous as being unique and complex, at the same time very easily drinkable and crisp, and you can verify each and every one of these flattering claims at any of the numerous wineries on the island. The entire list is available here.

It’s impossible to imagine the wine story of the Croatian south without the Pelješac peninsula and its wineries, a unique paradise for every wine enthusiast, especially fans of good red wine. Many Pelješac wines have become renowned, not only in Croatia but all over the world. You can find all of the Pelješac wine spots here – see for yourself why their wines are internationally renowned and world famous.

We can’t talk about the Neretva river valley without mentioning its amazing gastronomy – from fruit orchards to unique delicacies such as eels and frogs. However, this region is also home to several important wineries, where wine enthusiasts can enjoy tasting some amazing wines. For a list of wineries in the Neretva region, click here.

When you look at all the wealth of wine-related activities in the Dubrovnik-Neretva region, it is clear that every wine enthusiast must dedicate a spot in their itinerary for wine tastings and touring some of the wineries. Wine tourism

There is a rich vine cultivation tradition and quality behind the story, and wine tastings are an excellent way to learn about local culture an history, as well as the beautiful vineyards.
