World giants sucombed to Croatain (and Dubrovnik) wines

A very interesting event took place on Sunday, June 5th, at the Excelsior Hotel in Dubrovnik. In total, 42 samples were placed in front of 14 expert tasters in a blind degustation among which some of the best international and domestic wines could be found.

The idea for the event came from sommelier Siniša Lasan from the restaurant proto, who recently participated in the most prestigious world wine tasting event – Decanter world wine award – in London. Out of 7 flights per 6 samples, in 4 the best ranked were Croatian wines. The star of the event was the sparkling wine Šember(2005) which beat the renowned the Krug Grand Cuvee champagne. The Korak chardonnay beat the famous Burgundian wines Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne and the Merlot “Degrassi” beat the famous Petrus from 2007. The “Merlotini” of the Dubrovnik Wine cellars has also been confirmed to be better than the great Petrus to the delight of all.

At the end, the conclusion was drawn about how the importance of alike events is not emphasised enough and that this must become an important issue in the future. So, when in Croatia be sure to pick a Croatian wine – you simply can’t get it wrong.
