Coastal Tourism

The possibilities for sport and recreational activities throughout our County are truly diverse. Primarily, these are water activities: water skiing, wind surfing, sailing, underwater fishing. Of course, you can seek pleasure on land with tennis, football, basketball and volleyball. The County offers a unique mountain environment – numerous well marked walking and hiking trails with the possibility of an expert guide from one of the mountain societies operating throughout the County to lead you.

For those encountering a sport for the first time, as well as for those wishing to advance their knowledge and skills, there are organized schools for tennis, sailing and diving in dozens of centres. The eternal bond of the population of this region to the sea is seen through the development of water sports. Traditionally, the most popular sport is water polo. The people of Dubrovnik are exceptionally proud of the success of their water polo team ‘Jug’.

Sailing and Yacht Charter

The majority of attractive locations in the Dubrovnik and Neretva County can be visited by sea. Nautical tourism is therefore a significantly developed branch of tourism in this region. A highly indented coast with numerous islands and islets allows for safe sailing and peaceful time at sea, even when the weather conditions are not quite ideal. The availability of a safe anchorage in a peaceful cove, protected from the wind is a requirement for every sailing trip that lasts longer than one day. Even with one-day trips, experienced captains organize a route that assures constant vicinity of well protected coves that are so numerous in this part of the Adriatic. Less experienced sailors, that apply their skipper knowledge for approximately a week in a year, can also safely enjoy these peaceful waters that offer many, constantly available shelters from the storm. The archipelago of Mljet and the Elafiti islands, in addition to secure anchorages, are also rich in unique natural beauties, which is a valid reason to visit this region. And we won’t even mention the feeling of sailing below the impressive Walls of Dubrovnik.

These waters are a particularely attractive sailing location, however people rarely visit it with their own vessels. The boats are frequently rented, and you may find an overview of all yachts you can charter at Dubrovnik on this website: charter yachts in Dubrovnik . You can find boats in this area at the ACI marina Dubrovnik (Komolac) and at the new built marina in the vicinity (Slano), which increased the capacity and enabled a larger number of charter boats. Also, the visitors can charter yachts in Split, due to a great number of rental boats and they visit Dubrovnik as a part of their one-week or two-week sailing route in the Adriatic. If you are interested in other locations, you may find a list of all rental boats on the Croatian coast here

Due to the fact that this area of the Adriatic is especially attractive, take into account that it is also very frequented during summer months. For those who dislike the crowd we reccomend sailing this region during pre-season or post-season when the prices are lower, the crowd is smaller and it is far more likely that you will sail into a spacious cove where you may privately enjoy the rich nature.
